Dogs Bark To Wake Their Owners at 4:30 Am, Leading Them To Call 911

When a Michigan couple were fast asleep one night, their two dogs suddenly started barking incessantly at around 4:30 a.m. The husband was forced to get up, and he went outside in the freezing cold to investigate. Immediately, he realized it would have been too late had the alert dogs not gotten him out of bed.

At first, the two Labradoodles, Adam and Eva, just barked madly and tried hard to wake up their owners, Susan and Lonnie Chester.
“Adam and Eva began to get intensely restless in our room where they sleep. And it was definitely out of the ordinary,”.
While unable to get their owners out of bed by merely barking, Adam started to pull Lonnie’s sleeve. He was so persistent that Lonnie couldn’t ignore his pet pooch, and got up to follow the two anxious dogs to the front door. Seeing the dogs pressing against the door and raring to rush out, Lonnie thought there was probably something wrong outside.

The instant Lonnie opened the door, Adam and Eva bolted out. They ran to the driveway, where a woman was lying on the ground. Wearing just a nightgown, the woman was shivering in the icy cold of about 9 degrees Fahrenheit (approx. -13 degrees Celsius) at around 4:30 a.m.

“She looked up at me and said, ‘I’m so cold,’” said Lonnie, recognizing the woman was their 89-year-old neighbor. “I have no idea how long she had been out there. She must have been terrified.”
Lonnie quickly brought the elderly woman inside. The couple wrapped her in blankets and called 911. The paramedics soon arrived and so did the elderly lady’s family, who had been searching for her. They had arrived at the Chesters home in Norvell Township.

Susan estimated their neighbor had been outside for about 20 minutes. “I believe that she will be 90 years old next month I do believe she was confused. And that’s the only reason that happened. I can’t say what her condition was but she had something going on,” she said.

“I do believe [the woman] was led to our house,” she added. “We think she saw the lights on our house and went toward our house because other than [the lights from] our house, it was really dark.”
Susan said the woman had frostbite on one foot, but apart from that, she was doing fine. The woman and her husband will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary this coming spring.

The Chesters were proud of their dogs for saving the elderly woman’s life.

“[We felt] just incredible, just incredibly proud, just amazed at these dogs and how sensitive they are. They just have super sensitivities,” Susan said. “They seem incredibly intelligent to me. They pick up on things, they’re really responsive, and [they’re] really tuned in dogs.”
